Homework#7

THE RAVEN:CITIZENSHIP/COMMITMENT

So, am going  to talk about the values "citizenship and commitment" from the story "The raven".First of all, what is citizenship, well its basically is the is the is the fact of belonging to a community because you live in it, and the duties and responsabilities that this brings. For example After 15 years in the U.S.A., he has finally decided to apply for American citizenship.
Only people who can trace their family history in Kuwait back before 1920 are entitled to citizenship. So now that is clear what is "citizenship" its time to check  what commitment means,Making a commitment involves dedicating yourself to something, like a person or a cause. Before you make a commitment, think carefully. A commitment obligates you to do something. Some commitments are large, like marriage.

COMMITMENT

Well,i believe that in this story the value of commitment is represented in a very strong way, because the narrator He kept his position and never stopped believing in the possibility that his wife would continue there maybe trying to give him some sign.also sometimes created to want so much a person can become sickly because if ever said person will hurt you in some way the blow will be too strong and could kill who you are. This man did not care that the crow only repeated the word nevermore he held firm until the end of the story believing that the crow was a sign of his wife lenore. In my opinion the crow is just that a crow which is lost and only in the middle of the night and simply seeks refuge in a quiet place, now the question is because he only repeats that word because I believe that it is simply a bird which he learned a word and he simply repeats it for repeating sure it does not have any great meaning but for the narrator of the story which has experienced the tragic death of his wife could have meant something more something like a signal from the beyond. To conclude about this value in the story of "the raven" this value is represented throughout the story from beginning to end as you can notice the way in which this man persists in believing that his wife is still there.

CITIZENSHIP

In my opinion this value is not fully represented in the story because the narrator or rather the story itself never mentions anything about the country where this character lives or even makes reference to something typical of his country or city, could be suppose that happens in the United States of America since the author lived there.
Although that kind of stories are very classistic in this country, of course this is not the typical American romance story since it is not any author. Edgar allan poe has always been characterized by this class of novels which give much of what to talk.
This author has a very specific style which is dark and gothic in a certain way but very interesting at the same time.

CONCLUSION

This is a very interesting story from which we can learn many values which in society today have been lost as are the consistency and commitment that a person can provide to their loved ones.

It could also be said that this story leaves us a lot to think about, for example, what would we do if one day some loved one dies or, what would we do in this man's place? We would do thesame as him? could we live in peace?

It is very interesting when you put yourself in the victim's place because in this way it is truly possible to understand more or less how this person feels.

                              "SELF RELIANCE"

"Self-Reliance" is an 1841 essay written by American transcendentalist philosopher and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson. It contains the most thorough statement of one of Emerson's recurrent themes: the need for each individual to avoid conformity and false consistency, and follow their own instincts and ideas.

Emerson mentions that citizens control the government so they have control. He also mentions how “nothing has authority over the self.” He says, “History cannot bring enlightenment; only individual searching can.” He believes that truth is inside a person and this is an authority, not institutions like religion.

"Self-Reliance" took shape over a long period of time. Throughout his life, Emerson kept detailed journals of his thoughts and actions, and he returned to them as a source for many of his essays. Such is the case with "Self-Reliance," which includes materials from journal entries dating as far back as 1832. In addition to his journals, Emerson drew on various lectures he delivered between 1836 and 1839.
The first edition of the essay bore three epigraphs: a Latin line, meaning "Do not seek outside yourself"; a six-line stanza from Beaumont and Fletcher's Honest Man's Fortune; and a four-line stanza that Emerson himself wrote. Emerson dropped his stanza from the revised edition of the essay, but modern editors have since restored it. All three epigraphs stress the necessity of relying on oneself for knowledge and guidance.
The essay has three major divisions: the importance of self-reliance (paragraphs 1-17), self-reliance and the individual (paragraphs 18-32), and self-reliance and society (paragraphs 33-50). As a whole, it promotes self-reliance as an ideal, even a virtue, and contrasts it with various modes of dependence or conformity.
Because the essay does not have internally marked divisions delineating its three major sections, readers should number each paragraph in pencil as this discussion will make reference to them.

A Psalm Of Life and The tide rises, the tide falls

"A Psalm of Life" carries a message of hope and encouragement. It encourages people to live their lives to the fullest, using the short time we have here on Earth as a gift. The poem is a message to future generations to find work and action that gives them purpose and passion.

Death is literally everywhere in "The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls." The poem takes place at twilight (the death of the day), a traveler is seen leaving the shore for thelast time (he is dead by the end of the poem), and the speaker keeps telling us that, while the tide rises, it also falls (in a sense, it dies).

A Psalm of Life" carries a message of hope and encouragement; it basically says that although life is so short and so temporary, the fact that we do eventually die doesn't matter that much, because we can still live life to its fullest.

The young man, speaking from his "heart," refuses to accept that life is “an empty dream” or that the soul is dead.

A Psalm of life

Instead, he says that life is indeed real and true and that death is not the goal of life; the soul lives on and does not turn to dust. We are meant to act and go beyond mere sorrow or happiness.Even though we are brave, though, we still move towards death. Thus, we must seize the life we have and be heroic, be more than dumb beasts. We ought to be wary of the past and the future, and instead live and act within the present.
When we look at the lives of great men we can see that it is possible to live with meaning and that when we depart, we leave our “footprints on the sands of time.” It is possible that some other person who is toiling mournfully may see our footprints and take heart. Knowing this, we should be hopeful, prepared for anything; we should endeavor to achieve and pursue, as well as “learn to labor and to wait.”

The tide rises,The tide falls

This poem describes a seaside scene. The tide rises, and the tide falls. It's twilight, a bird is calling, and a traveler is leaving the shore, heading for a nearby town. Now it's dark, the sea is calling, and the waves erase the traveler's footprints from the shore. Despite this gloomy perspective, the dawn does come again. There are signs of life everywhere. Horses are ready and rearing to go; a hostler is calling out. Sure, the traveler will never return to the shore (because, you know, he's dead), but the tide rises again, and then… well, the tide falls.

The Devil And Tom Walker

The devil and Tom Walker is a short story by Washington Irving that first appeared in his 1824 collection Tales of a traveller as part of the "Money-Diggers" section. The story is very similar to the German legend of Faust.

VALUES:Trustworthiness and Thankfulness

For me these values are not at all represented in the story since none of the main characters had these qualities, rather I think they stand out for the lack of these.
First we have Tom Walker who is a person too miserable in my opinion since he is never satisfied with anything, then there is the wife who is just as miserable as Tom.They were so miserly that they even conspired to cheat each other. And last but not least is the devil who obviously it was not someone to trust, and it does not represent any good value.
There are very clear examples in the history when Tom is unthankful, like when he complains about the things he have and most of the things about his life including his wife.

Although most of the relevant characters in the story do not possess these qualities, there are some groups that do, such as the Indians, who were kind to Tom even when it was obvious that he was not a person to trust because he was always lonely and he looked dissatisfied.

"The Devil and Tom Walker" ends when Tom is shouting at his customer, whom he's about to ruin financially to make a profit for himself, even though they are supposed to be friends. When this customer begs for help and points out how much money Tom has already made from him, Tom shouts this:"The devil take me," said he, "if I have made a farthing!"

So EVEN at the end Tom showed everyone the kind of person he was
